Yes, SwipeWard is completely free. We earn a commission from card issuers when you apply and are approved through our links — at no cost to you. See our Affiliate Disclosure for full details.
SwipeWard participates in affiliate programs with credit card issuers. When you apply for a card through our links and get approved, we may earn a referral commission. This never affects card terms or fees for you.
We strive to provide accurate, objective information on all cards regardless of affiliate relationships. Our ratings and highlights reflect genuine assessments. However, cards with affiliate agreements may appear more prominently. We always recommend verifying terms directly with the card issuer.

General Credit Card Questions

An annual fee is a yearly charge by the card issuer for using the card. Cards with annual fees typically offer stronger rewards and benefits. Many premium cards charge $95–$695/year. No-annual-fee cards are a great starting point if you want to avoid this cost.
APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is the interest rate charged on balances you carry month to month. If you pay your full balance every month, APR doesn't matter. If you carry a balance, a lower APR saves you money. Current credit card APRs typically range from 19%–30%.
It depends on the card. Premium travel cards like Chase Sapphire Reserve typically require Good to Excellent credit (700+). Student and secured cards are designed for building credit with Fair scores (580+). Each card on SwipeWard shows the recommended credit score range.
A hard inquiry when you apply typically reduces your credit score by a few points temporarily. Most scores recover within 3–6 months. Avoid applying for multiple cards in a short period as multiple hard inquiries can have a larger impact.
A welcome bonus (or sign-up bonus) is a one-time reward offered when you meet a spending requirement within the first few months of opening a card. For example, "Earn 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months." These bonuses can be worth hundreds of dollars.
